Breathing deeply, slowly, with intent, sends signals to the parasympathetic nervous system it’s time to calm down.

Spend a minute breathing in on a count of 4, holding the breath in on a count of 4, then exhaling on a count of 4, to finally holding no breath in on a count of 4.

Repeat until you feel better.

This technique is called box breathing, or tactical breathing, and it’s what the Navy SEALs use in high stress situations.
