Hypnotherapy is a powerful therapeutic technique that harnesses the natural state of hypnosis to promote healing and personal growth. Unlike the sensationalized portrayals in movies and television, hypnotherapy is a safe and effective method used by trained professionals to address various issues, from anxiety and stress to chronic pain and unhealthy habits.

Debunking Common Myths About Hypnotherapy

1. Loss of Control

One of the most prevalent fears about hypnotherapy is the idea that you’ll lose control of your actions. In reality, you remain fully aware and in control throughout the session. Hypnotherapy works by guiding you into a state of deep relaxation, where your subconscious mind becomes more receptive to positive suggestions.

2. Mind Control

Hypnotherapy is not about mind control or manipulation. A hypnotherapist cannot make you do anything against your will. Instead, they help you access your subconscious mind to achieve your therapeutic goals.

3. Revealing Secrets

Another common worry is that you might reveal personal secrets while under hypnosis. However, you will only disclose information that you are comfortable sharing. The purpose of hypnotherapy is to create a supportive environment for personal growth, not to pry into your private life.

4. Getting Stuck in Hypnosis

It’s a myth that you can get “stuck” in hypnosis. Hypnosis is a natural state that you enter and exit regularly, such as when you’re engrossed in a good book or daydreaming. A skilled hypnotherapist will always guide you safely back to full wakefulness.

Stress and Anxiety

Hypnosis has been shown to be a useful treatment to relieve severe stress and anxiety.

In addition, the Mayo Clinic recognizes that hypnosis sessions can be an effective accompaniment to other treatments, such as CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy). If you are in treatment and are interested in introducing hypnosis, consult with your therapist or medical professional first.

Low Self-Esteem Issues

Within hypnosis, I have specialist approaches that help people strengthen their self-esteem, self-love and self-worth. During hypnosis, I guide the client into a focused state of mind and work with their subconscious through vivid imagery, visualizations and reinforcing of positive thoughts and beliefs. In this way, they can change negative thought patterns into more positive ones.

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

Hypnosis sessions have been shown to be effective in treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) by changing how individuals emotionally perceive and respond to their symptoms. This approach involves inducing a hypnotic state in a client, typically through relaxation techniques, and then employing visualization, suggestion, and imagery to reframe the messages received from the digestive system, making them less distressing. By doing so, hypnosis can help reduce the severity of pain and restore normal gastrointestinal function. Additionally, hypnosis can address and alleviate the stress and anxiety that often exacerbate the emotional aspects of IBS, further enhancing its effectiveness as a treatment option.
